Aug 6th meeting on Forensics

On Thursday Aug 6th, in room D5, at BTC from 7-9pm, BLUG will have it’s monthly Open to the Public meeting.

This month’s presenter will be Brian Pate who’ll cover computer forensics. His presentation will cover the following scenario:

“A company employee stole some software from his company. He broke into a Senior employee’s account to gain access to restricted areas of company servers. The “bad” employee is using Linux as a desktop, and is making standard forensic tools difficult to work with. Under this scenario, I’ll show, using Linux based software, how to process this case.
Specific items that will be touched:
Using Autopsy (linux based forensic processing UI)
Imaging and Hashing techniques
Recovering deleted Items
Recovering communications (email, messengers, etc)
Web history analysis
Importance of Log Correlations
External media and it’s importance
Methodologies and Legalities of Digital Forensics”

Sounds like a lot of fun and of course we’ll have our regular Q&A session with Linux in the news with a report from Bill, Bob, and John about LFNW at OSCON.
